Bronze plaque stolen at Moluccan monument in Wierden

Thieves have stolen a bronze model at the Vossenbosch monument in Wierden in Overijssel. The monument is a reminder of camp Vossenbosch, where hundreds of Moluccans lived for years after their arrival in the Netherlands in 1951. The model with a map of the camp was part of it.

“Who would even think of doing this,” says Paul Salakory to RTV East† He was born in camp Vossenbosch and grew up there. “It has emotional value, which cannot be expressed in money.”

The monument was unveiled last year and is a gift from the Wierdense society to the Moluccan community. “That’s why we think this theft is such a shame,” Salakory says. The monument is both recognition and recognition for us.”

The municipality of Wierden owns the monument. Mayor Doret Tigchelaar has filed a complaint. “We think it was the thieves doing the material, because it’s worth money. But there’s so much emotional value in this.”
