After years of being closed due to the pandemic, a BronxWorks indoor pool once again welcomed children and adults to learn water skills that could save their lives.
The pool was inaugurated after several renovations to its infrastructure.
Tammy Vargas lives in The Bronx, and brought her little son James to start his swimming lessons, or at least to take a dip with the instructors.
“Very happy because this way the children can learn to swim, even I who don’t know how to swim. I was paying for some classes and the two oldest ones are very expensive, so being able, because there are three of them, to be able to bring them here is a blessing,” says Tammy Vargas, resident of The Bronx.
Shortly before being able to use this pool, BronxWorks directors and elected officials cut the ribbon inaugurating the renovated pool located at 1130 Grand Concourse Avenue in the Bronx, which was closed in 2020 due to the pandemic, and also had leaks, It was in very poor condition and today with state funds of 1 million one hundred thousand dollars, both the gym of this center and the swimming pool were renovated.
“This is one of the first projects that we have completed, that we have invested close to 400 thousand dollars, to fix this facility, fix the pool and ensure that the community of the south of the Bronx can receive what it deserves, says Robert Rodríguez, secretary of New York State.
BronxWorks has been providing help and various services to the residents of this borough for 50 years, and they celebrated in a big way.
“We currently have 55 programs in the Bronx where we offer immigration services, after-school programs for children, we offer prevention services so that people are not left homeless. We also have exercise programs for seniors, so on Saturdays here we offer classes for people who want to come swim, do water exercises,” says Alexander Soto of BronxWorks.
The astonished reaction of the vice president of the Bronx county was the same as that of all those who saw the change of the renovated pool.
How do you feel when you see this pool that is for the community?
“I have a feeling of pride and happiness, more happiness for our children, our residents who now have a safe pool and within an organization that is here not only to provide recreational resources but also resources necessary for a better life,” says Janet Peguero, Bronx Borough Vice President.
And make sure that the children of this county learn to swim, skills that could save their lives, in the water.
