NEW YORK – Several victims live a real nightmare after being left on the street by a raging fire in the Bronx.
A woman says she spent the night sleeping on an MTA bus for lack of options, while a mother of six says she has no idea what to do after her two-night stay at a Red Cross hotel is over. to her family as an interim measure.
Nine people were injured, most of them taken to hospital, in a persistent fire that engulfed a six-story building and completely destroyed several apartments before the flames went out on Tuesday night, authorities say.
Firefighters say the fire broke out on the third floor of the Davidson Avenue building shortly after 11pm and quickly escalated into two alarms. More than 100 firefighters responded.
Firefighters put out the flames before midnight, but they reignited, taking the strain until early Wednesday morning. Seven of the nine patients were transferred to the hospital. Details of his injuries were not provided immediately.
The other victims were treated on the spot.
The American Red Cross says it is helping several families with children displaced by the fire. At least four apartments were said to be a total loss.
A mother of six who was offered two nights at a hotel by the Red Cross says she doesn’t know where she will go next. She and her children survived safely, but her cat is missing, she says, and she fears the feline is lost in the flames.
Residents were told Wednesday to enter their charred homes to get what they could. Some were seen carrying garbage bags full of personal belongings. The whole building is without electricity.
Annie Herrera, who lives in the building, told our sister network NBC 4 New York that the fire broke out in her neighbor’s unit, burning her face and hands. She says her neighbor says the fire broke out under her bed, where she had loaded several items, although the official cause of the fire is still being investigated by the FDNY.
As the mother of six, Herrera was kicked out of the house. She spent the night sleeping on an MTA bus. She says she doesn’t want to do it again.
It is not clear how many people live in the building. The investigation is ongoing.
