NEW YORK — A 15-year-old boy is the latest suspect wanted in connection with the deadly shooting at a Bronx subway station last week that claimed the life of a 35-year-old Mexican man caught in the crossfire.

Police have now identified three suspects, all teenagers, who they believe are responsible for the shocking display of violence at the Mt. Eden Avenue station on February 12. Two of those suspects are already in custody; a third was identified through a flyer distributed by the NYPD over the weekend.

A 16-year-old boy was arrested Thursday and charged with murder in the shooting that left one person dead and five others wounded. The suspect, who has not been identified due to his age, also faces five counts of attempted murder and one count of weapon possession.

NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny said the teen was detained by NYPD officers and the U.S. Marshals Regional Task Force after learning he was leaving his apartment in West 172nd Street, where he lives with his mother. The suspect did not say anything to officers and requested legal representation when he was detained, Kenny confirmed.

Kenny said three teenagers fired 19 shots on the busy subway platform around 4:30 pm last Monday. In addition to Thursday’s arrest, police also believe they know where one of the other shooters is: in the hospital.

“We believe one of our victims, who is 14 years old, is possibly one of the other shooters. He had since been arrested in another non-fatal shooting that occurred on January 15,” Kenny said. “In that shooting, two groups come together in a very similar way to what happened on Monday. There is a group loitering on the corner in front of a bodega. Another group approached them. Words are exchanged, punches are thrown, shots are fired. “

Investigators have maintained that the shooting was not random and believe that some of the victims included members of the two warring groups, while others were bystanders. It appears to have been gang-related, police said, and detectives are closing in on the motive for the shooting.

“We believe the subway incident is retaliation for the shooting that took place in mid-January,” Kenny said. “We have two teams of youths arguing. We are getting preliminary information that it could be due to some drill hits. The incident that happened in January is definitely a dispute between these two teams. This incident seems to be retaliation for that.”

Bullets fired in a subway station in the Bronx

Police say the chaos began with a fight between two groups of teenagers on a northbound number 4 train approaching Mount Eden station.

“We have two groups that know each other. They get on the train, one on 125th Street in Manhattan, and the other on 161st Street in the Bronx, near Yankee Stadium. Once the groups get together on the train, there is a verbal dispute that quickly turns into a physical fight,” Kenny explained. “When the train arrives at the Mt. Eden station, a bullet is fired inside the car. You can imagine the chaotic scene. You have a train full of people arriving on a platform full of people.”

Around 4:30 p.m., at least one person pulled out a gun and fired shots while still on the train, police said. When the doors opened, more shots were fired on the platform, which is where each of the victims was hit, with innocent victims caught in the mix.

The five injured in the shooting are expected to recover. The only fatality was a 35-year-old man from Mexico.

Surprisingly, amidst the chaos, the victim received no help from passersby on the platform.

“It’s heartbreaking to see the video of him lying on the platform dying while people walked by him,” Kenny said. “It’s a testament to what these young people are doing here. Here’s a man who’s just going about his business trying to make his way in life and makes the mistake of being curious to see what’s going on and gets hit in the chest.” “.

The shooting is believed to be related to gang activity, particularly groups associated with D Block and Burnside.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS.
