Broncos Head Coach Sean Payton Criticizes Predecessor and Jets Offensive Coordinator, Aaron Rodgers Responds

Broncos head coach Sean Payton badmouthed predecessor and Jets offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett. Aaron Rodgers can’t leave this uncommented.

Broncos head coach Sean Payton has been anything but positive about predecessor Nathaniel Hackett.

“Of course, many have a share of the blame for the performance over the past year, but the performance of the coaching staff was one of the worst I’ve seen in NFL history (…) Everything I’ve heard about the past year.. .we will do the opposite,” he found clear words in an interview with “USA Today Sports”.

Payton apologized shortly thereafter, but Aaron Rodgers didn’t want to let the Broncos head coach’s controversial statements go uncommented.

A-Rod, who worked with Hackett at Green Bay, slammed Payton and defended his offensive coordinator Hackett.

NFL: The most important things in brief

“Yes, I love Nathaniel Hackett, and those comments were very surprising – for a coach to say something like that about another coach,” he said on NFL+.

And further: “I think that was completely wrong, inappropriate, and I think he shouldn’t mention my coach’s name anymore.”

Rodgers doesn’t understand Payton

It’s no secret that Rodgers thinks highly of Hackett. “My love for Hack runs deep, we had some great years together in Green Bay,” the 39-year-old continued.

“We’ve stayed in touch, I love him and his family, he’s an incredible family man and father. And on the field, he’s probably my favorite coach in the NFL. Just his approach – he makes it fun. Like how how he takes care of the boys, how he approaches things with respect, leadership, honesty and integrity,” Rodgers enthused.

Excuse for bad Broncos performances?

In addition, the Jets quarterback indicated that Payton could use his comments to provide an excuse if the Broncos performed similarly poorly again in the coming season.

“It doesn’t make me feel good when someone like Payton, who has achieved a lot in the league, is so insecure that he has to put down another man to brace himself should things not go well for his team in the coming year .”
