Bronchiolitis: what are the warning signs? How to react? – In the foreground

October 14, 2022

As every year, bronchiolitis returns in mid-October. While the number of cases continues to increase in France, this pediatric disease is already in an epidemic phase in the Hauts-de-France, Ile-de-France, Nouvelle-Aquitaine and Occitanie regions.

Bronchiolitis is an acute and contagious viral infection that affects the bronchioles (i.e., the small bronchi) of children. It typically starts in mid-October and ends in late winter with a peak during the month of December. Every year 30% of children under 2 years of age are affected.

Bronchiolitis is often caused by a virus called respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). The symptoms are very impressive as the pathology manifests itself with cough and rapid breathlessness.

Recognize the disease

Adults and older children who carry respiratory syncytial virus usually have no signs or develop a simple cold. They can then easily transmit this virus through saliva, coughing and sneezing. Not to mention that RSV can remain on hands and objects (such as toys, pacifiers or duvets).

In the little ones, bronchiolitis begins with a simple cold (stuffy or runny nose) and the child coughs slightly. Hence, coughing becomes more frequent, breathing can become labored. The little one may be embarrassed to breathe and have difficulty eating and sleeping. He may also have a fever. ” In most cases, bronchiolitis resolves spontaneously after 5-10 days, but the cough can persist for 2-4 weeks. “, Explains Public Health France.

How to behave?

If your child has trouble breathing or has trouble eating or sucking, see your doctor as soon as possible. Clean your little one’s nose several times a day with saline, especially before feeding or drinking. Give him water to drink regularly to avoid dehydration. Divide his meals. Do not cover it too much and ventilate your home (especially the room where it sleeps).

When to worry?

While it is preferable not to clutter pediatric emergencies, some situations still require caution:

  • If your child is less than six weeks old;
  • In the case of a baby younger than three months born prematurely;
  • If you already have an identified respiratory or heart disease;
  • If you drink less than half of your bottles at three consecutive meals or if you vomit systematically.

Can bronchiolitis be prevented?

As with many winter viruses, the onset of bronchiolitis can be prevented with common sense measures. Here are the main ones:

  • Wash your hands before caring for a baby. This hygienic gesture must last at least 30 seconds, with soap and water or using a hydroalcoholic solution;
  • As far as possible, avoid taking it to confined public places (public transport, shopping centers, etc.);
  • Do not share unwashed bottles, pacifiers or cutlery;
  • Regularly clean items your baby comes into contact with;
  • If you have a cold, wear a face mask and avoid kissing your baby (which is often easier said than done …).
