Bron between ambitions and elections

Located in the east of Lyon, Bron is a stronghold of the city. Fifth city of the metropolis of Lyon according to theINSEE, with approximately 41,000 inhabitants in 2016, Bron is trying to develop its attractiveness.

Since 1971, the town hall of Bron is directed by the PS. Socialist territory that the right could perhaps recover during the 2nd 2020 municipal election round.

During the 1is turn is Jean-Michel Longueval (United Left) which comes out on top with 42.60% of the vote. In 2014, the socialist party, represented by Annie Guillemot, had arrived first on 1is turn with 30.10% of the vote. The left therefore gained 12.5 points in 2020 compared to 2014.

An agglomeration often associated with Jean-Jacques Queyranne, politician, and Karim Benzema, French international footballer. Bron is also a city in full expansion thanks to its cultural arrangements and programs. Its many amenities such as the Portes des Alpes shopping center, hotels and offices have created a lot of jobs. Bron also plans to build housing by 2030: work related to the phenomenon of “gentrification” of the city of Lyon.

An ambitious city

Bron has reorganized its transport: the C8 and C15 bus lines have been created as well as the T5 tram in the direction of Eurexpo and the T2 to Saint-Priest / Bel-Air to facilitate travel to cultural points. However, 24.6% of Brondillant people use public transport to get to work. In 2015, Annie Guillemot, President of Sytral, was able to develop transport.

Regarding air transport, Lyon-Bron aerodrome has been reorganized. Located about ten kilometers east of the center of Lyon, it is the smallest and oldest airport in the city and the third business airport in France. He notably welcomed many presidents of the Republic as Nicolas Sarkozy and Jacques Chirac in 2006 or Emmanuel Macron on June 16 during his visit to the Sanofi laboratories. Also, some sports clubs like OL and ASVEL in 2006.

Bron is also a student city with its many accommodation and apartment rentals. She counts 3,032 students aged 18 to 24 and 7.6% students from the population aged 15 to 64. Since the 1970s, it has also welcomed students from the Porte-des-Alpes campus of the University of Lyon II. There is notably the student residence Adèle located 2 minutes from the Lyon II University tram.

At the cultural level, since the first mandate of Jean-Jacques Queyranne from 1989, the city seeks to become innovative: Book festival, film festivals “Les Alizés” or even Reading Days organized every year in educational establishments.

On the sport side, the Pierre Duboeuf stadium, organizes many sporting events such as hosting 400 schoolchildren in 2018 on the occasion of the 33th city games edition. The goal: to introduce a large number of sports activities to students from six different primary schools. The stadium also orchestrated the world masters championship in 2015.

Unfinished development

Tourism remains weak despite its 12 star hotels: no camping, no collective accommodation.

Despite its few grocery stores, Bron still needs to develop local shops. .

Because of its gentrification, Bron has to face a gradual rise in unemployment and a drop in jobs. According to’INSEE, there were 945 fewer jobs between 2011 and 2016 in Bron.

Regarding the rate of employed women, it remains low since still according to theINSEE : there was a drop of 205 employees between 2011 and 2016.

The city must also manage the increase in young people over 15 without diplomas: in 2016 according to theINSEE, only 16.1% of this population has a baccalaureate.

Bron still suffers from competition in terms of attractiveness with other cities in eastern Lyon such as Lyon, Villeurbanne, Vénissieux and Vaulx-en-Velin.

Being a student city, the transport offer must be even more attractive for the coming years, particularly concerning night transport.

Jérémie Bréaud or Jean- Michel Longueval will have to work more on the proximity of shops so that Brondillants are more connected with their city.
