Broken collarbone is damaged by bicycle training Jumbo-Visma | NOW

Kai Verbij broke his collarbone during a bicycle training on Friday. The South Holland skater from Jumbo-Visma will be operated on later today.

Verbij was cycling with his teammates Hein Otterspeer and Dai Dai Ntab when the trio drove over a bump in the road. Verbij and Otterspeer crashed into the asphalt, while Ntab was released with a fright.

After an examination in the Tjongerschans hospital in Heerenveen, it appeared that Verbij has a tear in his left collarbone. Otterspeer suffered several bruises from the accident. It is not yet clear how long the recovery of both will take.

Both Verbij and Ntab have only been employed by Jumbo-Visma for a few weeks. Both top sprinters came over from Team Reggeborgh last month because they felt they were ready for a new challenge.

Kjeld Nuis took the opposite route and exchanged Jumbo-Visma for Team Reggeborgh. Jumbo-Visma hopes to present Jutta Leerdam as the next reinforcement. Negotiations are in the final stages.

Verbij and Otterspeer probably don’t have to worry about missing the start of the new season. The next race is only mid-November with the World Cup matches in TomaszĂłw Mazowiecki.
