Brock Purdy: “Mister Irrelevant” is now stirring up the NFL

Selected as the 262nd and last player of the draft, the quarterback of the San Francisco 49ers is suddenly a star.

San Francisco/Vienna. In fact, San Francisco 49ers fans had already seen their team’s title chances drop massively. After Jimmy Garoppolo broke his right foot two weeks ago, the second quarterback this season is out with a serious injury. The 49ers had already lost a playmaker in Trey Lance (broken ankle) on the second day of play. So San Francisco was faced with the question: Can the third pick in football’s top position be good enough?

A certain Brock Purdy has now been called before the curtain. The Arizona youngster was known only to insiders until his first NFL appearance on the 13th as a replacement for Garoppolo. Purdy did well in college (Iowa State), but no one predicted a great career for him. This year’s NFL draft landed him a contract in San Francisco, but Purdy was drafted as the 262nd and final player. A leap of faith looks different, and only in the rarest of cases have runners-up played a role in the National Football League. The most notable exception is kicker Ryan Succop (drafted 2009), who won the 2021 Super Bowl with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
