Broadway, in New York, and its closed theaters – Avalon / Starface
Broadway theaters in New York will remain closed until at least May 2021. The announcement was made last Friday by the Broadway League, the union representing theater producers and owners. Last June, they still hoped to be able to reopen in january.
“With nearly 97,000 workers who rely on Broadway for a living and an annual saving of $ 14.8 billion at the city level, we are committed to reopening as soon as conditions allow. We are working tirelessly with many partners to keep the industry going once we can once again raise the curtains, ”said Charlotte St. Martin, President of the
Broadway League.
A prosperous year
In the penultimate season, from May 2018 to May 2019, $ 1.83 billion in tickets were sold for Broadway shows. The most profitable season in history according to the annual report of the Broadway League. While all theaters closed their doors on March 12 because of the
pandemic, it is certain that the results of the last season will be less amazing, not to mention the present season which simply did not take place.
A disaster for the New York economy as countless hotels, restaurants and other services depend directly on frequentation of the famous avenue.
