Seth Rudetsky, known for his multifaceted career in music and theater, recently traded the East coast chill for the sunny skies of Palm Springs, California, to tackle a role he never anticipated: Edna Turnblad in a high school production of the beloved musical, ‘Hairspray.’ This unexpected turn came about after David Green, a former high school theater teacher with connections to many of Rudetsky’s talented friends from Orange county, extended an invitation. Green, now teaching in Palm Springs, has a unique approach of incorporating Equity actors into his high school musicals, and he saw Rudetsky as the perfect fit for Edna, a role famously originated by Harvey Fierstein.

initially, Rudetsky hesitated. While he held the show and Fierstein’s performance in high regard, he couldn’t quite picture himself in the role. He recalled a past audition offer, not for a teenager on The Corny Collins Show, but for Wilbur, the role dick Latessa originated. Considering Latessa was 70 years old at the time, Rudetsky, much younger than, declined that opportunity as well, demonstrating a keen awareness of casting appropriateness.

however, fate had other plans. On the very same day he declined the ‘hairspray’ offer, Rudetsky hosted his SiriusXM talk show, seth Speaks, with guests Kerry Butler, Laura Bell Bundy, and Marissa Jaret Winokur—three original stars of ‘Hairspray’. This serendipitous encounter seemed to nudge him closer to accepting the challenge.

The Palm Springs production of ‘hairspray’ wasn’t Rudetsky’s only theatrical endeavor. He was joined by his husband, James Wesley, and Beth Malone, adding even more star power to the local stage. This collaboration highlights the close-knit nature of the theater community and the willingness of seasoned professionals to support and engage with local arts initiatives.

Beyond ‘hairspray,’ Rudetsky’s schedule included other notable events. He was involved in ‘Vape,’ described as a ‘Grease’ parody concert, promising a humorous and contemporary take on the classic musical. Additionally, he participated in a ‘Finn’ benefit at The Town Hall, showcasing his commitment to charitable causes and his dedication to using his platform for good.

the ‘Finn’ benefit at The Town Hall featured an notable lineup of talent, including Andrew Rannells, Lea Salonga, Bonnie Milligan, Nikki M. James, and Adam Pascal. This star-studded event underscores Rudetsky’s extensive network and his ability to bring together leading figures in the entertainment industry for meaningful causes. The benefit also included a ‘Chess’ concert and a birthday party for Andrea Martin, further illustrating the vibrant and interconnected nature of the theater world.
