The British tabloids in their own way already took an advance on an agreement on Thursday morning. The night before Brexmas, for example, was headlined by The Sun, with a photo of Prime Minister Johnson dressed as Santa Claus pushing a Brexit present down the chimney.
Fishermen
The imminent compromise brings a sigh of relief in both camps as a chaotic British farewell on January 1 has been avoided. But it also means that Dutch fishermen will be able to get significantly less fish from British waters, although the British in particular have added a lot of water to the wine in the past two days.
However, the doom scenario of a no-deal Brexit, in which the British would fall out of the European internal market on 1 January without any form of regulation, has been averted. If that had become a reality, Dutch fishermen would no longer be allowed to fish in British waters at all.
The UK complies with European rules and in return gains free access to the European internal market. This means that you can trade back and forth as is still the case now: without quotas and tariffs. Should the UK nevertheless deviate from EU standards in the future, for example in the environmental field, this could have consequences for their access to the European market.
