Dubai: A British woman has been sentenced to two years in prison in Dubai for calling her roommate ‘WhatsApp’. During the lockdown, a British woman called a Ukrainian woman living in a flat through a private WhatsApp chat. In October, a verbal dispute arose between the two over who would use the dining table when working on a work-from-home basis.
The young woman, who has been living in Dubai since 2018, has been working as an HR manager. It was only when she decided to return to the UK with her partner last week that she realized that a case was pending against her. The woman was taken into police custody at the airport. The police had informed them that they had been barred from leaving the country due to the police case.
In the case, the young woman could face up to two years in prison or a fine of thousands of pounds. The Sun reports that the woman awaiting trial has no money to pay the fine and no place to stay. She is now living with a friend and is waiting for a court date, which could last months. According to reports, the woman’s visa will expire in eight days.
