Via its Twitter account, HMS Richmond, a Type 23 frigate of the British Royal Navy, announced that it was passing through the Taiwan Strait on its way to Vietnam to connect with the Vietnamese People’s Navy.

HMS Richmond, which is part of Britain’s Carrier Strike Group 21 (CSG-21) led by the aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth, said it had just had a “busy period working with partners and allies in the East China Sea.”
After Brexit or Britain’s exit from the European Union, the UK has been trying to strengthen its presence in the Indo-Pacific Region and enhance defense and security cooperation with Japan.
On September 4, 2021, the aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth made her first visit to a Japanese port following exercises with the Japanese Self-Defense Forces and US Forces in August.
In an interview with Nikkei Asia, Tony Radakin, a senior admiral in the British Royal Navy, said it was very clear that the Taiwan Strait was “part of a free and open Indo-Pacific.”
“It is very clear that the Taiwan Strait is international waters,” he said. “This is a waterway that can be used by various countries,” he said.

In addition to British warships, United States (US) warships often cross the Taiwan Strait, which irritates China.
Beijing still regards Taiwan as part of China, even though the island is democratically self-governing.
