British Vogue: nine black models on cover is statement

“The new cover indicates that we live in an era where black beauty is increasingly celebrated,” says Dutch lifestyle journalist Janice Deul in a response. But she also has her reservations about the photo.

According to Deul, the message that Vogue wants to communicate is clear, but there is also a lot of commotion on social media, she says. “Some models are so dark that you can barely see their faces. And it’s about their identity as beauty icons of a new era.”

Deul hopes that Dutch Vogue will also become more inclusive. The new editor-in-chief Yeliz Çiçek has been campaigning for more diversity in Dutch society for some time now.

On the catwalks, diversity has recently increased significantly. Fashion Spot’s diversity report shows that at last year’s fall and winter shows, 43 percent of female models were of color.
