The corona virus is going to win the competition. A third corona wave can no longer be averted. That says virologist Bert Niesters of the UMCG Saturday in an interview with it Nederlands Dagblad.
In the newspaper, Niesters speaks of a competition of the vaccine against the virus in which the virus will win that competition. “There is only one cure, and that is to vaccinate faster,” says the virologist in the newspaper. “All I hear is that vaccines are left on the shelf.” Niesters thus refers to a broadcast of News hour last Thursday, which shows that the vaccination of the elderly and disabled in care institutions is slow.
In the Netherlands, we are currently dealing with the British corona variant, which is more contagious than the variant that emerged in the Netherlands in March last year. According to Niesters, ninety percent of the positive tests are now the British variant. “If we don’t have lower contamination figures by the end of next week than we do now, we will have a big problem. If the figures continue to develop as they do now, a further increase in the number of hospital admissions will be a matter of time. ” The virologist also warns against making further relaxation.
