British Teenager’s Journey with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma: From Diagnosis to Treatment

A British teenager revealed her journey with a malignant disease, and how she was diagnosed with the condition when she was only 16 years old, after her laugh began to sound like a seagull.

In detail, Maddy Elleby, 18, from Farnham, Surrey, first began to feel unwell while on vacation in Sweden, but she ignored the symptoms and thought they were “flu.”

After undergoing medical examinations, Maddie was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a rare cancer that affects the lymph nodes, in January 2021.

At first, doctors gave her antibiotics and inhalers, but they couldn’t get rid of the cough, and she soon began to notice numbness down her arm and swelling in her collarbone.

Maddie took to the internet to check her symptoms against a variety of illnesses, and soon rushed back to the doctor, where she received the devastating news.

It is worth noting that Hodgkin lymphoma is more common in people between the ages of 20 to 40 years, or over 75 years of age.

This disease develops in the lymphatic system, which is a network of vessels and glands spread throughout the body.

The cancer affects disease-fighting white blood cells, and early signs include painless swelling of a lymph node, usually in the neck, armpit, or groin.

Maddie entered a spiral with the malignant disease, as she received the necessary treatment for years, and thus she still feels afraid of not getting rid of it, even though she is trying to continue with her life normally.
