British sleeper train passengers wake up at departure station: ‘This beats everything’

“I’ve been using this train for 15 years now and have experienced a lot of crazy things,” one passenger wrote on Twitter, “but this beats it all: waking up and finding out that the train never left Glasgow.”

The traveler in question, Jim Metcalfe, said the passengers were let on board as usual. “They let everyone get in and go to bed and then just leave us standing here.”

Woke up with a sandwich

At five o’clock the next morning he was woken up by an employee who offered him a sandwich, he told the British broadcaster BBC.

He explains that he didn’t realize anything, because of his habit of falling asleep well before departure. The train was scheduled to depart at 11:40 PM. Metcalfe always makes sure he is on board around 10:30 pm so that he is asleep as soon as the train leaves.

Money Back

Serco, the company that provides the connection, has since apologized. The train was unable to run as the heat earlier this week affected some rails and switches.

A spokeswoman told the British newspaper The Guardian that travelers who did notice that the train was not running, were allowed to sleep on board and were able to continue their journey the next day. “All passengers will get their money back.”
