The British ship that was hit by Houthi rebels last month sank after fourteen days, the Yemeni government confirms. The Rubymar is the first vessel that the Houthi rebels have sunk in the Red Sea.
The Houthi rebels shot at the cargo ship in mid-February. The Rubymar suffered damage and the crew was evacuated. The vessel was previously left abandoned in the Red Sea. The ship has fertilizers, ammonia and oil on board. That is why there are fears of major environmental damage now that it has sunk.
Houthi rebels in Yemen have been carrying out missile and drone attacks on international shipping for months. They want Israel to stop the fighting in the Gaza Strip and are trying to exert pressure.
Since January, the Americans and British have been hitting back with air strikes against the Houthis. They receive support from a number of other Western countries, including the Netherlands.
The British Navy received another report on Saturday of another sinking ship west of the Yemeni port city of Mokha. According to the navy, the ship has been anchored and the crew has since been evacuated.
