British sanctions against Russia – Johnson approved additional measures against Russia

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has confirmed additional measures against the Russian Federation in response to its invasion of Ukraine. These measures will be introduced against the aggressor in addition to the sanctions that were announced this week.

What are the additional measures?

  • freezing the assets of all major banks in Russia, including VTB, whose assets amount to 154 billion sterling;
  • a ban on Russian companies raising financing in the UK markets;

  • sanctions against individuals as well as legal entities, including their subsidiaries, including the largest Russian defense company Rostec;

  • in the near future to ban the aggressor airline Aeroflot from landing in the UK;

  • suspend the use of a license to export to Russia, for example, electrical components or parts of military trucks;

  • within a few days to ban a range of high-tech exports to Russia;

  • consider the possibility of introducing legislation regarding the limitation of the amount of deposits for Russian citizens in British bank accounts;

  • block Russia’s access to the SWFIT payment system;

  • to extend this range of measures to Belarus for its role in the invasion of the territory of Ukraine;

  • consider introducing an economic crimes bill that would allow for action against Russian fundraisers in the UK.

“These powers will allow us to completely exclude Russian banks from the UK financial system … depriving them of access to sterling and clearing payments through the UK,” Johnson said.

Moreover, the British Prime Minister said that the United States of America is taking similar measures today.

“For the success of all these measures, it is vital that we have the unity of our partners, the unity of the G7 and other forums,” Johnson said.

Johnson added that Britain would continue to push Russia out of the global economy “day after day and week after week.”
