British Royal Navy Ship to Provide Aid to Gaza in New Humanitarian Sea Corridor Initiative – Latest News

NNA – The British Foreign and Defense Ministries said that a British Royal Navy ship will provide aid to Gaza as part of an international effort aimed at establishing a new humanitarian sea corridor in early May, according to what was reported by Reuters.

British Foreign Secretary David Cameron said the multinational effort, which includes the United States, Cyprus and other partners, will work to develop a new temporary jetty off the coast of Gaza.

Cameron added in a statement: “The situation in Gaza is tragic and the possibility of famine is real. We remain committed to delivering aid to those who need it most.”

Cameron’s office said the Foreign Secretary also pledged 9.7 million pounds ($12.26 million) to help establish the sea corridor from Cyprus to Gaza.

The Foreign Ministry said that the initiative will see aid pre-screened in Cyprus and sent directly to Gaza, through the new temporary American dock being established off the coast or through the port of Ashdod after Israel agrees to open it.

British Defense Secretary Grant Shapps said that the new temporary dock on the Gaza coast will receive cargo ships to deliver aid by sea.

The government said that British military teams had been integrated with planning teams at the US operations headquarters in Tampa, Florida, as well as in Cyprus, for weeks to develop the safest and most effective sea route.

Britain said it would continue to call for “improving mechanisms for avoiding military conflict,” along with guarantees ensuring the safety and security of aid workers.
