False rumors about the background of the Muslim perpetrator, Rudakubana, are widely circulating on social media.

This statement sparked anger and escalated into anti-Muslim riots. Residents staged demonstrations and were exploited by right-wing groups and then attacked Muslim places of worship.

Soon after, riots broke out in Southport. The crowd threw bricks at the mosque.

Riots then ravaged other cities such as Liverpool and London.

In London, officers arrested 111 people during the riots.

In Liverpool demonstrators threw chairs, flares and bricks at officers.

Riots also occurred in Manchester after demonstrators and security forces were involved in scuffles.

In the city of Hull, demonstrators smashed the glass windows of a hotel used to house migrants. Police said three officers were injured and four arrested.

Riots also broke out in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Demonstrators threw fireworks amid tense clashes between anti-Islamic groups and anti-racism rallies.

The city in north-east England, Sunderland, did not escape the riots. The mob burned cars, police stations, burned shops and attacked mosques.

“This is not a protest, this is unforgivable violence and disorder,” Northumbria Police Chief Mark Hall said on Saturday (3/8), quoted by AFP.

The riots greatly disturbed Muslims in England.

“The Muslim community is very concerned at the moment, shocked by what they have seen,” said secretary general of the Muslim Council of Britain (MCB) Zara Mohammed.

In response to this unrest, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer promised that anyone who commits violence against the law will be prosecuted.

He also accused “gangs of thugs” of taking over the country’s grief to spread hatred.
