British Researchers Find The Effectiveness of Flu Vaccines Against Covid-19

JawaPos.com – The flu vaccine is believed to also offer vital protection against Covid-19 sufferers. The latest research was revealed by researchers from the UK’s National Center for Health (NHS).

The NHS flu shot is available annually for those considered to be in high-risk groups such as over 65 years of age, children, and those with severe chronic illnesses such as asthma or heart failure. However, this year the vaccine is also reaching the normal group and being offered to people in the 50 to 64 age group, children in the first year of middle school and anyone else. The goal is to protect against exposure to the Corona virus.

Recent published research has found evidence that the flu vaccine may also offer protection against Covid-19. Two studies conducted in Italy and Brazil involved more than 100 thousand people. They found the vaccine reduced the number of patients admitted to hospital due to Covid-19 infection.

The two research teams from the University of Milan and the University of Sao Paulo are urging governments around the world to encourage people to get the flu vaccine faster. Speaking to MailOnline, researcher Peter Openshaw, a professor of experimental medicine at Imperial College London said the findings were good news.

“This is great news and means the flu vaccination campaign is even more important. These findings have involved research on many people, “he said as quoted from Diabetes.co.uk, Wednesday (28/10).

That is, they believe the flu vaccine is now also a weapon in the prevention of the Corona virus. “This has the potential to be one of the few effective measures ahead of this winter,” the researcher said.

The study in Italy, published in the journal Vaccines, found that in areas where flu vaccine uptake was up to 70 percent, deaths from Covid-19 were lower. The number is not more than 10 per 100 thousand population.

The UK Ministry of Health ensures there is enough flu vaccine for the public. “There is no shortage of flu vaccines nationwide, with doses sufficient for 30 million people to be vaccinated in the UK,” concluded the UK Ministry of Health.
