British research: a lot less infections after one dose of corona vaccine

This makes it one of the largest studies to date into the effectiveness of the corona vaccines.

Two shots of the Pfizer and AstraZeneca vaccines are required to be fully protected. But even after the first shot, the chance of a corona infection with both vaccines was already 65 percent lower, the study shows.

Also protected if you have already been ill

After the second shot of the Pfizer vaccine, the chance of infection was even 90 percent lower than without vaccination. The effectiveness of the AstraZeneca vaccine has not yet been tested after the second injection, because few people had received that second injection in the study.

Another outcome of the study: people who have already had corona are just as well protected as people who have had two injections.

According to the research, there may be about ten weeks between the first and second dose. During that time, many antibodies could be seen in the blood of people who had the shot. These antibodies show that the immune system is learning to defend itself against the corona virus.

It is important that people continue to comply with the measures in the meantime, the researchers say, because there is still a chance that they will contract the corona virus and spread it further.
