It is expected that Prime Minister Boris Johnson will present the news at a press conference in Downing Street.
The Delta variant, which is also expected to become dominant in Norway, means that the next step in the reopening cannot be taken on 21 June as originally planned.
Government sources inform Sky News that the reopening will be postponed until mid-July, ie by up to a month.
BBC also writes that further reopening of society is postponed. This may mean that restrictions on sports, pubs and cinemas will be maintained, while nightclubs will still be closed.
When the British started the reopening in April, Boris Johnson said this about his pub plans:
Johnson is expected to ask his countrymen to be patient, and he will emphasize that a final effort is needed to ensure that a reopening is “irreversible”, writes the news agency DPA.
According to an opinion poll conducted by Opinium, 54 percent of those polled support the decision to postpone the reopening. Only 37 percent believe the reopening should take place according to plan.
The British celebrated their first “Freedom Day” when pubs and restaurants were allowed to open their doors in May, but Prime Minister Boris Johnson will ask the British to make a final effort against the virus, says a source to Sky News.
– There is a race between the virus and the vaccines, the source says.
The postponement may, among other things, have consequences for the European Football Championship, as several matches are arranged in England.
