Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II has moved permanently from Buckingham Palace in central London. She will live and work permanently at Windsor Castle, about 20 kilometers west of the British capital, British media reported Sunday.

Buckingham Palace was officially the Queen’s headquarters and residence. Official receptions are now also arranged at Windsor Castle.

Elizabeth, 95, probably hasn’t been to Buckingham Palace in nearly two years. She went ‘working from home’ in Windsor in 2020 with the arrival of corona measures. Windsor was preferred by the British royal family anyway. Elizabeth’s husband, Prince Philip, died there in April. The more than 300-year-old Buckingham Palace is also undergoing renovations.

Since 1837, the first monarch to live and work there was Queen Victoria. She retired from public life and moved mainly to Windsor Castle after her husband, Prince Albert, died in 1861.

Elizabeth’s decision to officially leave Buckingham Palace comes months before her platinum anniversary celebrations. She then ruled for about seven years longer than Victoria. British media assume that the next residents of Buckingham Palace, after the death of Elizabeth, will be King Charles and Queen Consort Camilla.
