Commonwealth Day is celebrated on the second Monday of March (tomorrow), the day of the alliance between the countries that were once part of the British Empire. The British Queen Elizabeth II traditionally addresses the world in a pre-recorded message on the eve of that holiday. In a montage, all kinds of images are shown, including those of the queen herself.
This year was watched and listened to with suspicion as the much-discussed interview of her grandson Harry and his wife Meghan is also airing tonight in the US, and tomorrow night in the UK (and with us on One). By the way, at last year’s Commonwealth Day celebrations, Harry and Meghan fulfilled their last royal mission before retiring from the British royal family.
The British Queen is adapting this in a creative way. She stressed the importance of good contact with friends and family during this pandemic. Elizabeth also spoke of the important role of technology in this pandemic, in maintaining a sense of belonging in these troubled times. That message was supported by images of the British Queen, her son Charles, and her grandson William and his wife Kate at various video meetings.
