British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has suffered his first setback since taking office at Downing Street in October., and the Conservatives have fared poorly in England’s local elections on Thursday. The vote was to renew 8,000 councilor posts in 230 municipalities, and according to the results that are being released, which are still partial, Sunak’s party has suffered a significant setback in the areas that were traditionally his strongholds. The drop has been interpreted as a bad omen for the current British government.
As the BBC has stated, the conservatives have already lost 573 elected positions. Labor has won 302 but they are far from the only formation that benefits from mistrust. The Liberal Democrats (centrists) win 212 councilors on their own, and the Green Party wins 136. The Greens have also won a local council (or town council) for the first time in their history in England because they have won a majority of councilors in Mid Suffolk (in the East). According to analysts, at the end of the vote, Sunak’s party could lose a thousand councilors.
Sunak already indicated on the eve of election day that the elections would be “difficult”, because a setback was already expected. Instead, Labor has won in the emblematic town of Stoke-on-Trent (in the North), which in its day was considered the “capital of Brexit”. In this population, 69% of the voters voted in favor of the break between the United Kingdom and the EU.
