The leaders of the states should discuss the final details of a trilateral submarine agreement aimed at countering China.
It is expected that during the talks, which will be held in San Diego on March 13, decisions will be made on Australia’s next steps to obtain nuclear submarines.
“I am traveling to the United States to launch the next phase of the AUKUS nuclear submarine program, a project that builds ties with our closest allies and provides security, new technology and economic advantage,” Sunak was quoted as saying by the agency.
Reuters also points out that the prime minister added: “In turbulent times, the UK’s global alliances are our biggest source of strength and security.”
By the way, Britain, the US and Australia announced the AUKUS plan in 2021 as part of efforts to counter China’s growing military influence in the Indian-Pacific region.
