British pensioner Alan Rumsby Finds Antique Ring with Historical Significance – Estimated to Sell for up to £16,000

British pensioner Alan Rumsby used a metal detector to find an antique ring, which he will now sell at auction. The price of the decoration is tentatively estimated at 14 thousand to 16 thousand pounds sterling, that is, up to 770 thousand UAH in equivalent. And Rumsby himself did not even count on such a cost when he found the ring.

Writes about this IrishNews. The former carpenter discovered the jewelry in a field near the small village of Roydon in Norfolk. The gold ring with the coat of arms was located underground at a depth of only 2.5 cm.

The 75-year-old pensioner initially wanted to sell the ring to a museum. However, two years later, the British Museum refused the deal, and the artifact went to auction appraisers. The ring will go up for sale in London on March 12th.

The expected price exceeded the treasure hunter’s expectations, but he will have to share the proceeds with the landowner on whose territory the discovery occurred. “I intend to use the money, which will be split with the landowner, for vacations for myself and my wife,” Rumsby said.

During the assessment, it turned out that the jewelry dates back to the 16th century and probably belonged to a noble woman. “The ring is historically important. It is extremely rare to find a ring with the seal of the period worn by a woman. The coat of arms is divided into four parts, each representing the heritage of the family, namely Ashfield, Tendling, Botelier and Mapersall… We believe that the ring belonged to “Dorothy Ashfield, who was born in 1594, was the eldest daughter of the third son of Thomas Ashfield of Hopton in Suffolk and his wife Ellen Holditch of Ranworth in Norfolk,” said Noonans artefacts and coin expert Nigel Mills.

Rumsby himself shared that he was excited when he found the ring. “In more than 10 years of searching, I had never found anything made of gold, so I was very excited. It was only after it was taken to the museum that I realized how significant this discovery was,” he said.

As OBOZ.UA reported, a UK resident bought a ring with a fake diamond at a flea market back in the 1980s for just $13. Several decades later, a random the purchase made this British woman a millionaire.
