A British nurse has been charged with the murder of eight babies and the attempted murder of ten others in a hospital in Chester, south of Liverpool. The 30-year-old woman is said to have committed the murders and attempted murders between June 2015 and June 2016 in the neonatology department of the Countess of Chester hospital.
Yesterday she was arrested. She was arrested twice before in the case, in 2018 and 2019, but was released on bail.
The police have been investigating since 2017. This was instituted after the hospital rang the bell because of the large number of deaths in the department.
Cause of death unclear
Initially, an internal investigation was launched, when it was found that the premature babies had heart and lung failure and could not be resuscitated. After their death, strange spots appeared on their arms and legs. Experts could not determine cause of death.
The police investigation is extremely sensitive, local media report. The babies’ parents are kept constantly informed. They wait for answers to their questions.
The woman is due to appear in court tomorrow.
