In the British House of Commons, a parliamentarian has come out as transgender for the first time. Jamie Wallis, 37, from Wales, entered parliament three years ago. “I’m trans. Or to be more precise, I want to be. I’ve been diagnosed with gender dysphoria and I’ve felt this way since I was very young,” Wallis writes. in a statement.
The coming-out of Wales, which indicates that he still wants to be called ‘he’ for the time being was also discussed in the House of Commons. Prime Minister Johnson expressed his support for his party colleague: “The House of Commons is behind you and you can count on us if you are going to live the way you want to be.” Opposition leader Starmer echoed those words.
In the statement, Wallis wrote that he did not think he would ever say this publicly. “I never intended to share this with you. I always thought I’d be out of politics before I talked about this.”
Wallis writes that he was blackmailed last year because of his identity for a sum of 50,000 pounds. The blackmailer was eventually sentenced to prison, he reports.
Rape and accident
Wallis also speaks openly about a rape that took place last fall. “I was dating someone I met online. When I said ‘no’ because he wouldn’t wear a condom, he chose to rape me. I haven’t been myself since this incident and I don’t think I will ever recover.”
Wallis said he caused a car accident last year. He hit a lamppost and then drove on. He was later arrested and an investigation into the incident was launched. According to Wallis, he was struggling with post-traumatic stress disorder at the time. “I had no idea what I was doing as I drove on. I was overcome with fear.”
