British mercenaries in Ukraine face death penalty

DONETSK – Three suspected mercenaries from Britain and Morocco, who joined the Ukrainian military and were later captured by troops of the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR), could face the death penalty there.

The Attorney General’s Office of the DPR revealed the threat of punishment on Friday (27/5/2022).

“The investigation into the activities of a group of foreign mercenaries who allegedly took part in the preparation and conduct of hostilities against the DPR has been completed and the criminal case has been fully formed,” said DPR judicial spokesman Viktor Gavrilov.

“The case materials have been transferred to one of the republic’s courts for consideration which could result, taking into account the wartime, the application of the death penalty to the accused,” Gavrilov said.

The Attorney General’s Office said an investigation had confirmed Britons Shaun Pinner and Andrew Hill, along with Moroccan Ibrahim Saadoun, were involved in crimes under three articles of the DPR’s civil code (KUHP) code.

“They were charged with crimes by a group of people, forcible usurpation of power or forcible detention of power, and mercenarism,” Gavrilov said.
