The British media watchdog Ipso received more than 25,000 complaints about a column by Jeremy Clarkson The Sun in December. Clarkson stated, among other things, ‘Meghan, I hate her’.
Car freak and controversial presenter Jeremy Carkson wrote a column in January The Sun following the documentary series Harry & Meghan on Netflix. “I feel sorry for Harry,” Clarkson wrote. Meghan is a different story. I hate her. Not like me Nicola Surgeon (Scottish Prime Minister, ed.) of Rose West (a serial killer, ed.) hate. I hate her to the bone.’
Clarkson also stated that he dreamed of the day when Meghan would have to parade naked through the streets of every city in the country, “when the crowd shouts ‘shame’ and throws chunks of excrement at her.” After the publication of the column, Clarkson received a lot of criticism. Even his daughter distanced herself from what her father had written.
Britain’s media watchdog, the Independent Press Standards Organization (Ipso), has never received so many complaints about an article as about this Clarkson column. There were more than 25,000. They come, among others, from gender equality organizations and organizations that support victims and survivors of abuse.
Both Clarkson and The Sun has since apologized for the article. In a statement just before Christmas, Clarkson said he is “shocked that he has caused so much pain.” Clarkson, who in the past Top Gear presented, is now the face of The Grand Tour on Amazon Prime. Ipso says it will announce the outcome publicly after the investigation.
