London. Britain’s new Labor government on Thursday unveiled a raft of new rights for millions of workers, including more generous rules on sick pay and parental leave and significant restrictions on certain employment practices such as firing and rehiring. The package of measures is described by ministers as the biggest overhaul of workers’ rights in a generation.
The Employment Rights Act was published about a hundred days after Labor took power for the first time in 14 years, following its landslide victory over the Conservative Party in the general election.
The 28 measures have been widely welcomed by unions and pressure groups representing companies, although one of them described them as “clumsy, chaotic and poorly planned.”
Secretary of State for Business Jonathan Reynolds said the measures, which will come into force in 2026 following further consultation with businesses and unions, will raise the minimum floor for employment rights and provide better support for companies applying good practice.
“This is a comprehensive bill that, once implemented, will represent the largest improvement in labor rights in a generation,” he said.
Among the measures announced, workers will be able to apply for sickness benefit from the first day of absence instead of the fourth, they will be entitled to paternity leave and unpaid parental leave from the first day of employment, and they will be entitled to bereavement leave. . Workers will also have protection against unfair dismissal from day one.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s government has struggled to maintain the initiative since it was elected on July 4, with critics accusing it of weeks of drift and negative headlines about a series of giveaways. With lawmakers back in Parliament, Starmer hopes his government can get back on track in the coming weeks with a series of policies, most notably in the Oct. 30 budget.
