British King Charles III will address his people on Monday for the first time since he was diagnosed with cancer five weeks ago. According to the British press, he will promise Commonwealth member states that he will “continue to serve them to the best of my ability.”

This year, March 11 is Commonwealth Day, a ceremonial celebration of the Commonwealth of Nations, an alliance of 56 countries, mainly the United Kingdom and most of its former colonies and mandate territories. To mark the holiday, Buckingham Palace will distribute a pre-recorded speech from King Charles.

“I recently celebrated my own 75th birthday and it warms my heart to think of how the Commonwealth has been a constant in my life, a precious source of strength, inspiration and pride. In recent weeks I have been deeply touched by your extremely kind and thoughtful wishes for my health. In return, I can only continue to serve you in the Commonwealth to the best of my ability,” the tabloid The Sun has already quoted from the speech.

“My belief in our collective efforts and in the potential of our people remains as certain and strong as ever. I have no doubt that we will continue to support each other across the Commonwealth as we continue this important journey together.”

At the beginning of February it was announced that the 75-year-old British monarch had been diagnosed with cancer. It is not known which form of cancer this is and at what stage it was discovered. Despite his illness, Charles plans to attend the Commonwealth Heads of Government Conference in Samoa in October.
