British Home Secretary James Cleverley said the “unwise practice” of international students bringing their families to Britain is ending, with visa restrictions coming into force from today, DPA reported.
According to him, the ban, which affects all foreign students, except those enrolled in postgraduate research programs and students with state scholarships, will stop tens of thousands of migrants, BTA reported.
The measure in question was announced in May by the previous interior minister, Suella Braverman, shortly before it became clear that, according to official figures, the number of migrants from January to June amounted to 672,000.
The move by the British government could hit universities that rely on fees from foreign students and could also damage the country’s reputation as an international destination, experts warn.
Cleverley last month unveiled a raft of new restrictions which he said would reduce the number of migrants by 300,000 a year. One of the measures is that Britons earning less than £38,700 a year will not be able to get a family visa.
