‘British government wants to lift Northern Ireland’s special EU status’

British Foreign Secretary Truss wants to abolish Northern Ireland’s special EU status, British newspaper writes The Times† Truss would not be confident that an agreement with the EU around the Brexit deal is available.

According to the newspaper, a bill has been drafted that will unilaterally abolish mandatory customs controls for goods sent from the United Kingdom to Northern Ireland.

Also, companies in Northern Ireland will no longer have to comply with EU rules and legislation and the European Court of Justice will no longer be allowed to rule on cases related to Northern Ireland.

When the British leave the EU, it has been agreed that Northern Ireland will remain part of the European internal market. New customs controls at the border with the Republic of Ireland would go against the 1998 peace agreement that ended violence in Northern Ireland.
