British Firm Under Fire for Offering Reindeer Hunting Trips: Campaign to Ban Trophy Hunting Urges Ban

– This is probably the most un-British thing I have ever heard of. If we need proof of how evil trophy hunters actually are, we have it now, says polar explorer and animal protection activist Sir Ranulph Fiennes, according to the newspaper Mirror.

Fiennes’ tirade does not end there:

– These cowards happily ruin Christmas for children everywhere. How is it going? That a British company should profit from this abomination is completely incomprehensible. We must ban this sick industry, says Fiennes – who represents the organization “Campaign to ban trophy hunting”.

The reason for the resentment of the noble polar explorer is that the Scottish company Hendry, Ramsay & Waters offers customers reindeer hunting in Norway.

The company stated on its website that it had been given access to hunt wild reindeer in Breheimen and Jotunheimen. Hunting for wild reindeer in Norway takes place from 20 August to 30 November.

The Mirror presents the case as a revelation, and writes, among other things:

“The website states ‘price on application’ and even recommends rifles that are good at killing reindeer to the trophy hunters.”

In Norway, there are strict rules for what caliber a rifle must have in order to be able to take the life of big game in an effective and as gentle as possible way.

Daily Mail, Daily Express and the Scottish edition of The Sun is among the other British newspapers that have mentioned the hunting offer.

Dagbladet has tried to reach the company several times. Hendry, Ramsay & Waters has not responded to the inquiries.

The company has also not responded to The Mirror’s inquiries.

After the media storm in Great Britain, the company has removed hunting in Norway and wild reindeer hunting from its website.

“Hendry, Ramsay & Waters are pleased to offer the following program in Breheimen and Jotunheimen National Park – which has Europe’s last population of wild reindeer that have been there since the Ice Age.”

“There are only a few licenses for big bucks, so the hunt is exclusive and very short,” the company wrote.

Reindeer hunting has taken place in Norway since the last ice age. Landowners dispose of the right to conduct or sell hunting on their own property according to regulated quotas.

Foreign hunters must pay a hunter’s fee in Norway, as well as have equivalent training or a course certificate as a hunter’s test in Norway.

Vidar Vange, leader of the Reinheim-Breheimen wild reindeer committee, does not recognize the descriptions of trophy hunting in the British media. Neither with Norwegian nor foreign hunters.

He is not familiar with the specific offer from the Scottish company.

– All meat from animals that are shot, including large bucks, is transported out and used. Trofé – if you consider a large buck with a legal felling license as such – is also used for food, says Vange to Dagbladet.
