British financier Jacob Rothschild, a leading member of one of Europe’s best-known banking dynasties, has died at the age of 87. His family announced this on Monday.
Born in England in 1936, Rothschild began his career at the family bank in 1963. He then co-founded J. Rothschild Assurance Group, which became today’s London asset manager St. James’s Place.
The family described Rothschild in the statement on his death as “an outstanding financier, a champion of arts and culture, a dedicated public servant, a passionate supporter of causes in Israel and Jewish culture, a keen environmentalist and a much-loved friend, father and grandfather”.
Ed Vaizey, Britain’s former culture secretary, describes Rothschild on X as one of the country’s greatest cultural philanthropists.
The roots of the Rothschild banking family go back to eighteenth-century Frankfurt. From there, several family members moved to cities across Europe to build banking businesses.
