The American film »Nomadland« by the Chinese director Chloé Zhao is the winner of the evening with four awards at the British film awards known as Baftas. The road movie won the award for best film at the awards ceremony in London’s Royal Albert Hall on Sunday. Zhao received the Bafta for best director, Frances McDormand was awarded for best leading actress. In addition, »Nomadland« received the camera award.

With the triumph at the Bafta Awards, the film has further consolidated its role as a favorite at the Oscars, which will take place in two weeks’ time. On Saturday, the Directors Guild of America (DGA), in which the US directors are united, awarded the film in the main category “Best Feature Film”.

The DGA awards given in Hollywood are considered a good indicator of who will win the directing Oscar. Aside from last year, they were right every time in the winner’s freestyle in the previous six years.
The film is about a growing group of impoverished elderly people living in trailers in the United States who cling to the last vestiges of the American dream.

The award winners were connected via video due to the corona
The award ceremony, which was spread over two evenings, began on Saturday with the awards in the technical categories. The prizes in the main categories were awarded on Sunday evening in London’s Royal Albert Hall. However, no audience was allowed due to the corona pandemic.

Christopher Nolans Science-Fiction-Action-Thriller »Tenet« was recognized for the best visual special effects.
The winners were connected via video. For once, after the death of his grandfather Prince Philip, Bafta President Prince William did not give a speech. From 1959 to 1965 Philip was himself President of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts.
