Conran died peacefully in his home just outside London on Saturday, his family said in a statement.
Terence Conran devoted much of his adult life to the design and sale of furniture. His style was characterized by modernism and simplicity.
In 1964 he founded the furniture and interior design chain Habitat. The affordable quality furniture that customers themselves had to put together took Europe by storm several years before another furniture chain, Ikea, broke through internationally.
In 1989, Conran also founded the Design Museum in London.
– Hardly anyone has left such a big mark on post-war homes in Britain as he. The legacy of Conran is enormous, says Design Museum director Tim Marlow.
