British Dancer Órla Baxendale Dies After Allergic Attack from Mislabelled Cookie – Tragic Story and Facts about Anaphylactic Shock

On January 11, British Orla Baxendale died of an allergic attack, which she had when she was at a gathering in Connecticut in the USA, writes BBC.

She had bought and eaten a biscuit containing peanuts, to which she was highly allergic. After she had ingested the biscuit, she suffered a severe anaphylactic shock, which led to her death.

Facts about anaphylactic shock (allergic shock)

Anaphylactic shock (anaphylaxis) is an acute and life-threatening allergic reaction.

If you have an anaphylactic shock, or see that someone else is affected, you should get medical help immediately! This is absolutely crucial. Call 113.

The most important treatment in the acute phase is to ensure free airways and to give the drug adrenaline in injection form. People who have had an anaphylactic reaction in the past are often equipped with a pre-filled adrenaline syringe – an EpiPen.

Anaphylaxis is caused by eating something the body cannot tolerate, after which a violent immune reaction occurs.

Symptoms: The person feels unwell, itching, feeling warm, rash, red skin and swelling.

The reaction occurs because the substance you are reacting to has bound to the mast cells in the body – which are part of the immune system – and destroys them. The damaged cells secrete a number of substances that lead to inflammatory reactions when the substances leak into the tissue outside the blood vessels.

Eventually, there can be so little blood fluid in the veins that the blood circulation also fails. The person goes into shock.

The family in mourning

The 25-year-old had been living in the United States since 2018, where she had followed her dream of becoming a professional ballet dancer.

Baxendale’s family are deeply saddened by the death, and are now releasing a statement about the news.

The 19-year-old died: – You were a coward

– We will never get over the pain of her being taken from us so early, but we want to say that we are so proud to call her our daughter and sister, and to have had the privilege of sharing 25 years with her , they say in a statement, according to Sky News.

– Meant a lot to many

The family is overwhelmed by the condolences from those who were close to the 25-year-old.

– We have received hundreds of messages from all over the world, from all the people who loved Órla. It’s clear she meant a lot to a lot of people, with her fascinating talent, her sassy nature and her incredible compassion for others, they say, before continuing:

– The truth is that Órla got more out of her 25 years than most people do in a lifetime. She will live on in our hearts.

Error marking

They don’t understand how allergies can still take lives in 2024, and encourage everyone to read up on anaphylaxis, and how to use EpiPens, and pay attention to early warning signs of severe allergic reactions.

The biscuit Baxendale ate was a Florentine vanilla biscuit from the American supermarket chain Stew Leonard’s.

Went to the dentist – got brain damage

It contained peanuts, which was not listed as one of the ingredients on the package.

Around 500 packs of the biscuits that were sold between 6 November and 31 December have now been recalled by the Food and Drug Administration, which is the American version of the Norwegian Food Safety Authority.

Dispute of guilt: Denies

Stew Leonard Jr., the company’s president and CEO, explained Wednesday that its supplier, Cookies United, had switched from using soybeans to peanuts in the recipe without notifying Stew Leonard’s safety officials.

Cookies United disagrees, saying that it had actually notified Stew Leonard’s in July of 2023 that the product now contained peanuts and that all products shipped to the retailer had been labeled accordingly.

Cookies United believes that the erroneous ingredient label was created by Stew Leonard’s.
