British cyclist Teo Geigen-Hart of the Ineos Grenadiers team secured victory in the prestigious multi-day cycling race “Giro d’Italia” in Milan on Sunday, celebrating his greatest career success.
At the end of the Italian tour, the cyclists had to take a 15.7-kilometer-long individual ride to the finish line in Milan.
Before the decisive stage, the situation in the overall standings was up to white, as Australian Jay Hindlie (“Sunweb”) and Geigen-Hart had identical total time. Thanks to a handicap of 0.86 seconds, the leader’s pink shirt became the property of Hindley before the final stage. Dutchman Vilko Kelderman (“Sunweb”) lost one minute and 32 seconds to both athletes.
On Sunday, the athletes started in reverse order for the overall ranking table, so only at the very end the winner of the tour was determined. In the final stage, 25-year-old Geigen-Hart was faster than Hindl, winning the Italian bike race.
The victory in the last stage was celebrated by a member of the Geigen-Hart team and the world champion in the individual race Filipo Ganna, the Italian covering the distance in 17 minutes and 16 seconds. Ganna won four stages in this year’s Italian tour.
Belgian Victor Campenarts (NNT) and another Ineos Grenadiers cyclist Roens Denis from Australia also climbed to the last stage. They both lost 32 seconds to Gann. Geigen-Hart was 58 seconds slower, finishing 32nd, but Hindley was another 39 seconds behind in 38th place.
Geigen-Hart beat Hindley by 39 seconds, but Kelderman was a minute and 29 seconds behind.
Geigen-Hart became the second British cyclist to win the Giro d’Italia, repeating the achievements of his teammate Christopher Frome. So far, Geigen-Hart has not been a great success, as he was mostly supportive of his teammates.
The first four stages of the Italian tour were to take place in the vicinity of Budapest, but due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Hungary refused to accept the stages that took place in Sicily. Also, due to the pandemic, the tour was postponed from May to October.
This year, none of the Latvians “Giro d’Italia” started, but last year Krists Neilands took part in the competition.
Significantly, the last six stages of the Italian tour overlapped with the introductory stages of “Vuelta a Espana”.
