British court blocks deportation of Julian Assange

London: WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange will remain in the UK. A British court has ruled that Assange should not be extradited to the United States. Westminster Magistrates’ Court in London has ruled that Assange will not be extradited to the United States.

Assange is facing trial in the United States for violating espionage laws and leaking official documents. Assange’s lawyer argued that the trial was politically motivated and a conspiracy by US President Donald Trump. “If Assange is released, he will be a big threat to the media,” he said. Judge Vanessa Barrett has ruled that Assange will not be extradited to the United States if he is released. The court ruled that Assange was mentally ill and could have attempted suicide

In 2010, Assange leaked documents of US covert operations in Afghanistan and Iraq. Britain then granted asylum to the exiled Assange.
