British Couple’s Mysterious Deaths in Egypt Hotel: What Really Happened?

Married couple John (69) and Susan Cooper (63) from Burnley in Lancashire, England, were on holiday in Egypt with their daughter, Kelly Ormerod, and three grandchildren in 2018.

The family stayed at the Aqua Magic hotel in the resort town of Hurghada on the coast of the Red Sea.

On the evening of August 20, the married couple, their daughter and grandchildren had dinner at the hotel’s restaurant, and ended the evening in the bar, before going to bed, writes British Sky News.

Special smell

John and Susan shared a room with one of their grandchildren, twelve-year-old Molly. When they returned to the hotel room, the air had a “yeasty” smell to it.

Three tourists found dead in Airbnb

Around 1 o’clock that night, Susan called her daughter Kelly. The 63-year-old said both she and her husband John felt unwell, and asked Kelly to fetch their grandson, who was in the room with them.

The following morning they did not come to breakfast, writes BBC.

During this week’s court hearing, the daughter told Kelly that she went upstairs to see her parents after breakfast.

Susan lay moaning in bed with vomit in her hair. John, who managed to get to the door, said he felt very ill.

And misery

When her parents’ condition rapidly worsened, Kelly called for medical attention. The father John began to struggle to breathe.

– His eyes had a kind of glazed, staring look, the daughter recalled during the hearing this week, and moved to tears, according to British media.

A short time later, John was pronounced dead in the hotel room, after several attempts at life-saving first aid. His wife Susan was taken to a nearby hospital, where she died the same day.

A report by Egyptian authorities said the deaths were caused by E. coli bacteria, but a new autopsy showed that could not be determined, according to an article in The Guardian from 2019.

Mysterious triple death: – This is the cause of death

Nor could it be proven that the couple died from carbon monoxide or food poisoning.

It was therefore long a mystery what had so suddenly taken the lives of John and Susan Cooper.

Bed bugs in the next room

It would turn out that the couple’s neighboring room in the hotel had been treated with a chemical pesticide after a bed bug attack.

The neighboring room and the hotel room of John and Susan had an adjoining door, it is reported. However, this should have been closed.

During the hearing, a statement was read out from German Dominik Bibi, who was at the hotel at the same time as the British family.

Made a horrible discovery: – Damn

Bibi, along with seven other family members, arrived at the hotel in Hurghada on 20 August. It was the mother-in-law who had been allocated the room next to the married couple.

But Bibi quickly discovered a bed bug invasion both in and under the hotel bed. He gave notice, and the mother-in-law got a new room.

Used masking tape

Later, he saw two uniformed men enter the hotel room with what he remembers as a two- or three-liter spray canister.

The Guardian reproduces:

“After five or ten minutes, they left the room again and used masking tape to close the door and seal the room.”

– I wouldn’t exactly say that the job was very professional, the German’s statement continued.

The hearings continue this week.
