British Couple Completes Historic North Pole to South Pole Journey in All-Electric Nissan Leaf

After 10 months on the road, Chris and Julie Ramsey completed their unique journey from the North Pole to the South Pole in an all-electric Nissan Leaf. According to a press release from Nissan, which sponsored the journey, this is the first time any car (regardless of drivetrain) has completed the journey.

A British couple started their journey from the North Magnetic Pole on the frozen Arctic Ocean, continued across the entire American continent and ended their journey at the South Pole. They managed to complete the trip as planned, i.e. during December, and in total they drove around 30,000 kilometers.

For their expedition, they took a Nissan Ariya with e-4ORCE all-wheel drive and a stock drive system, i.e. electric motors and batteries without modifications. But the car was modified by specialists from Arctic Trucks, thanks to which 39-inch BF Goodrich off-road tires were installed in the wheel arches.

Unusual charging

Charging the car in remote areas was to be solved in innovative ways, such as deployable solar panels and a compact wind power plant with a retractable mast on the tow. However, in the frozen areas, the crew was accompanied by two specially modified off-road vehicles of the Arctic Trucks company, which apparently also carried classic generators, as can be seen from social networks.

Nissan is investing in the production of electric cars in Britain, the production will be expanded to include the electric Qashqai and Juke

The idea of a trip from the North Pole to the South Pole started in the heads of the couple already in 2017, when they completed the demanding Mongol Rally with an electric Nissan Leaf. At the same time, it was the first time that someone with an electric car embarked on this demanding race, which measures over 10,000 kilometers and often leads through inhospitable terrain.

“I can’t believe we’re at the South Pole. After so many years of planning, it feels surreal. I’ve always had full faith in the amazing capabilities of electric cars and knew our Nissan Ariya could handle anything thrown at it. But it was a lot harder than I expected,” said Chris Ramsey.

“It’s been an incredible journey with the people we’ve met, the friends we’ve made and the support we’ve received. In the beginning it was just me and Chris, but the expedition team is now made up of thousands of kind and forward-thinking people,” added Julie Ramsey.

Nissan will sell only electric cars in Europe from 2030
