A British woman in her 20s who had volunteered as a combat medic in Ukraine since the start of the war between Russia and Ukraine was found dead on Christmas Eve. The exact cause of the woman’s death is unknown.
According to foreign media reports, including the British Independent, on the 30th of last month (local time), British citizen Catherine Mielnichuk (26) was found dead on Christmas Eve morning in a house in eastern Ukraine.
The cause of Catherine’s death has not been announced. Information regarding Catherine’s death is expected to be released soon by Ukrainian authorities. Catherine’s family said there was nothing suspicious surrounding her death.
Catherine came to Ukraine to help Ukrainians after the Russian invasion in 2022. Catherine, who majored in chemistry in college, has been working with an international volunteer group on the front lines for about 18 months, transporting medical supplies and equipment and treating wounded combatants.

On social media on the 23rd of last month, the day before her death, Catherine said, “Many of us are unable to return home or celebrate Christmas,” adding, “War has disastrous consequences mentally, physically and financially. “When we are losing hope and witnessing tragedy every day, a kind word can give us tremendous strength,” she wrote.
Project Konstantin, the Ukrainian volunteer organization where Catherine worked, said, “We are deeply sorry to announce the news of her death,” and added, “At this time, we are focusing on the pain her family is going through.”
