British Airways: Cuts routes for next summer – The decisions – 2024-09-24 23:27:55

British Airways has canceled all flights from a UK city airport starting in the summer of 2025, putting the UK in new post-Brexit difficulties.

The airline said in a statement that it is “suspending its operations in the summer of 2025 from Southampton Airport”, without however stating the reasons that led it to this decision. An airport spokesman said the move was “clearly disappointing”.

With its subsidiary, BA City Flyer, the airline operates weekend flights from the airport to Bergerac, Dublin, Faro, Malaga and Majorca during the summer.

According to Reuters, British Airways said affected customers would be contacted with options, including rebooking on alternative flights – either with British Airways or another airline – or a full refund.

A spokesman for Southampton Airport said: “Airline has nothing to do with Southampton Airport: Clearly disappointing when any route is axed».

«However, we are in constant dialogue with the airlines regarding the introduction of new services and this includes replenishing the routes withdrawn by British Airways».

The development comes almost a year after the airport’s runway extension was unveiled.

At the time, he said the longer runway was “absolutely critical” to its viability as a regional airport and to serve a wider variety of aircraft.

Britain: Flight cuts and abroad

Airlines are preparing for the end of the “revenge travel” boom, slashing ticket prices to fill excess seat capacity as a two-year post-pandemic boom gives way to a more uncertain outlook, according to a report by FT.

At the same time, Western airlines are reducing flights to China as the combination of low demand and high costs of flying around Russian airspace weakens their ability to compete with local carriers.

British Airways said a few days ago that it would suspend flights between London and Beijing from October, just weeks after Virgin Atlantic decided to scrap its Shanghai route, its only route to China. Although unaffected by the ban on Russian airspace, Australia’s Qantas plans to cut its Sydney-Shanghai route, saying its planes have at times flown almost … empty.
