British Airways cancels flights between London and Tel Aviv until Wednesday

British Airways announced on Sunday that it was cancelling flights between London and Tel Aviv, the capital of Israel, until Wednesday, due to escalating tensions in the Middle East.

“We have taken the operational decision to suspend our flights to and from Tel Aviv until Wednesday, August 28,” a company spokesman said.

“Safety is always our absolute priority,” he added, adding that British Airways was contacting its customers to inform them of “their travel options.”

Wizz Air also announced that it was “temporarily suspending” its flights between the British capital and Israel on Sunday “due to the escalation of the situation in the region,” the British agency PA reported.

The airline did not specify how many days this measure would last.

Virgin Atlantic also said it was extending the suspension of its daily flight between London and Tel Aviv until September 25. The company was due to resume flights on September 5.

The announcements come after Israel used airstrikes in Lebanon to thwart a large-scale attack by the Lebanese Islamist movement Hezbollah, which launched hundreds of drones and rockets into Israeli territory to avenge the death of one of its leaders.

French airline Air France has also cancelled its flights to Tel Aviv and Beirut “until at least Monday 26 August”.

As did Germany’s Lufthansa, which announced on Friday that it was extending the suspension of its flights to Beirut until September 30 and to Tel Aviv and Tehran until September 2.
